# How to Calculate China Import Costs Accurately
One of the biggest mistakes people make when importing from China is underestimating the total landed cost. They see a product for 500 SAR in China versus 1,200 SAR locally and think they are saving 700 SAR. But after customs, VAT, shipping, and agent fees, the real savings might be only 200 SAR — or even nothing. This guide teaches you to calculate accurately.
## The Import Cost Formula
Here is the complete formula for calculating your total landed cost in Saudi Arabia:
**Total Cost = Product Price + International Shipping + Customs Duty + VAT + Agent Fee + Insurance**
Let's break down each component.
## 1. Product Price (FOB)
This is the price of the product in China. If you are buying from AliExpress, this is the listed price. If you are buying from 1688 or Taobao, this is the price you pay the seller.
**Important:** If the price is in Chinese Yuan (CNY), convert to SAR using the current exchange rate. As of 2026, 1 CNY is approximately 0.525 SAR. Always use the day's rate, not a rounded estimate.
**Example:** A projector costs 1,200 CNY = 630 SAR
## 2. International Shipping
Shipping costs vary dramatically based on weight, volume, and speed:
- **AliExpress Standard / Cainiao:** Usually free or 10–50 SAR for small items
- **Shipping agent (sea freight):** 25–40 SAR per kg. Minimum charge usually 100–200 SAR.
- **Shipping agent (air freight):** 50–80 SAR per kg. Faster (7–14 days) but more expensive.
- **Express (DHL/FedEx):** 80–150 SAR per kg. Fastest (3–7 days) but costly.
**Volume weight matters:** Shipping companies charge by whichever is higher — actual weight or volumetric weight. Volumetric weight = (Length × Width × Height in cm) / 5000 for air freight.
